Going Green

Hi Wildlings,

I hope you’re enjoying the summer and spending lots of time outdoors! To be situated in such a beautiful natural environment as we are here at WildLuing is a privilege, and it’s our responsibility to protect our environment and keep it clean and habitable for the diverse species that live here. Because of that, we’re implementing a series of new initiatives to make us even greener! In addition to our current environmental measures like our very own wind farm, we’re excited to announce our beach clean event this weekend! In collaboration with The Scottish Coastal Clean Up, we’ll be going down to Luing’s shorelines and collecting as much plastic, rubbish, and netting as we can to help our coasts and waters thrive. While ocean plastic is not usually a problem Luing’s coast due to the strong tides moving around us in the Firth of Lorn, there are inevitably bits that wash up high enough to stick around, causing a problem not only for marine life, but our free-roaming livestock as well. Our cows love a paddle in the water when it’s warm out, and our noisy oystercatchers are always picking through the shoreline debris. We think it’ll be incredibly satisfying to see how many bags we can fill, and of course it’ll feel great doing something active for the environment. We’ll update you next week on how the cleaning goes!

In other news, we have recently ordered several nest boxes to help our birds next spring. There are hundreds of species of bird on Luing, and it’s swallow season at the moment - there’s even a nest in the ferry shed! Fledglings of all kinds abound at the moment, including our pheasants and sparrows, who are a little slow getting off the road at times with their brand new wings.

Stuck behind cows and waiting for pheasants is a common reason for lateness on Luing, but the pace of life here is generally a peaceful one - unless you’re rushing for the ferry, of course!

Tìoraidh,

Lottie
