All roads lead to Rome!
Soon a team of 6 cyclists will be departing the Isle of Luing to begin a gruelling ride to Rome, Italy for charity. This journey will be a demanding 1,800 mile cycle from the West coast of Scotland across to the Piazza Navona in Rome. The team led by Scottish former rugby captain Rob Wainwright will leave the Isle of Luing on Sunday 3rd March from the Cuan ferry. Travelling across Seil island and down to London, ready to reach Rome on 8th March. They are setting off from the WildLuing site where they will be staying, based on the Isle of Luing to start their journey.
The team will be completing the ‘All roads lead to Rome’ challenge in aid of the charity My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, to raise money and awareness for people diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. This foundation was set up by the well-known previous Scottish rugby player George ‘Doddie’ Weir; who passed away due to the disease in November 2022. This charity has raised thousands of pounds since Doddie Weir set it up in November 2017 after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. The WildLuing team are really looking forward to supporting and hosting the team in the WildSuites on Luing to provide a restful start to their journey. The Cadzow family will be transporting the team across the Atlantic in the family boat ‘The Grey Dog’.
The adventurous team will consist of 6 cyclists, headed up by Rob Wainwright, accompanied by 5 others including previous Scottish rugby player Stuart Hogg, retired Irish rugby player Gordon D’Arcy and 3 Isle of Coll farmers. Each team member will be riding about 3 hours a day in relays, equating to roughly 100 hours total covered on the road. This will be a tough journey for a brilliant cause.
The team will travel across to France via the Eurotunnel to arrive in Rome, Italy. This should be in time to deliver the match ball for the much-anticipated Italy v Scotland Six Nations match at the Stadio Olimpico on the 9th March. If people would like to cheer them on either on the Cuan ferry (Luing side) or Seil side please pop down on Sunday 3rd March at 8.30pm. We are sure they would appreciate the support.
